Your account is yours to end. You can delete it from inside the app at any time, without asking us and without explaining why. This page describes how to do it, what happens when you do, and the small number of things that remain afterward.

1. Deleting From Inside the App

Open your profile and scroll to the bottom, then tap Delete Account — it is also in Settings, under Account. You will be asked to confirm. Once confirmed, your account is deactivated immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion.

Deletion is not instant. Your account is deactivated immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion 30 days later. During those 30 days you can change your mind: simply signing back in cancels the deletion and restores your account exactly as it was. After the 30 days pass, your keys are destroyed and nothing can be recovered by anyone, including us.

This is available to every account, including accounts that have been restricted or suspended. Being in trouble with us does not cost you the ability to leave.

2. If You Cannot Reach the App

If you have uninstalled Legacy, lost access to your sign-in, or cannot use the in-app option for any reason, email shawn@legacy-ai.app from the address associated with your account and ask us to delete it.

We will confirm the request, verify that it comes from the account holder, and carry it out. If we cannot verify that the request is genuinely yours, we will not act on it — that protection exists for you, not for us.

3. What Gets Deleted

Deletion is permanent and it is not a hiding of your data. The following are removed:

Once your keys are gone, your encrypted content cannot be recovered by anyone, including us. There is no undo and no grace period after deletion completes.

4. What Remains, and Why

Two things survive deletion. We would rather name them than let you assume otherwise.

Your public key. Direct messages are encrypted between two people. If we destroyed your public key, the person on the other end of your conversations would permanently lose the ability to read their own message history — messages they sent and received, on their own device. We keep the public key so that their record stays intact. It cannot be used to read anything of yours, and your private key is destroyed.

Moderation records. If a report was filed involving your account, the record of that report is retained. This is what allows us to act on abuse and to meet legal obligations, and it is why deletion cannot be used to erase evidence of harm to someone else.

Messages you sent to another person remain in their conversation, because they are that person's messages too. Your name is removed from them.

5. One Exception

An account that is the subject of an unresolved child-safety report cannot be permanently deleted until that report has been reviewed. Deletion cannot be used to destroy evidence of harm to a child. This is stated in our Child Safety Standards and it is the only circumstance in which we will not act on a deletion request immediately.

6. Backups

Deleted data may persist briefly in encrypted operational backups before those backups age out on their normal schedule. It is not accessible in ordinary use and is not restored. Our retention periods are described in the Privacy Policy.

7. Before You Go

If you want to keep what you have written, export or save it before deleting. We cannot recover it for you afterward — that is the point of how Legacy is built, and it works against you here as much as it works for you everywhere else.
